A Study Asserts That Smoking Cannabis during Adolescence Does Not Harm Health Later in Life

  • Researchers have not found differences between people who consumed marijuana during their youth and those who did not.
  • They are aiming to offer help at an important moment in the debate in the United States.

A new study published by the American Psychological Association in the United States affirms that smoking cannabis during adolescence is not linked to physical or mental health problems that may arise later in life for consumers.

The research study was carried out by several scientists at the University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers University. They studied the effects of the plant on more than 400 males aged around 30 who were divided into four groups: those who were not consumers during adolescence or who smoked occasionally, those who were regular users, those who only smoked during this period and those who began to smoke later in life.

Experts have determined that there are no significant differences between those who were regular users and those who barely had any contact with the plant during that period, "irrespective of the quantity of cannabis or the frequency of consumption" explained Jordan Bechtold, one of the researchers from the study. They only detected certain symptoms in a small percentage of those who participated in the experiment, although it is not clear if this is due to their relationship with the plant or other factors.

The recent findings put an end to one of the most deeply rooted myths surrounding cannabis, that suggests people who consume at an early age can suffer from different respiratory illnesses (such as asthma and allergies), depression, anxiety, changes in blood pressure and mood disorders. It is also one of the few reports that clearly goes against traditional research studies that warn of the alleged innumerable risks that the product poses to health.

The conclusions of the report could help to promote cannabis legalisation in additional places in the United States. The progressive change being experienced in the country was the factor that motivated this group of experts to analyse what the consequences may (or may not) be on that age range. Bechtold states that his intention was to help and provide information on a controversial issue at a key stage of the regulation process.
