In the last few days Canada days has experienced a great change, one that will very likely go down in history: Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party, has been named the country's new Prime Minister. As the new head of the government, he has infused the cannabis community with new hope.

Trudeau had promised that, if he won the elections, he would legalise marijuana. If he keeps his word, as everybody expects him to, Canada will pull in front of its neighbour the United States. Trudeau is different: accessible to voters, he brings freshness and new ideas to the country. The day after his victory he was seen walking around without bodyguards outside a subway station, greeting those he found there and thanking them for his victory.

According to the press, he has announced that he will cancel a multi-million dollar contract for the construction of a military jet that he considers unnecessary. He also plans to welcome a greater number of refugees, and to raise taxes on those most able to pay. Canadians know that it is still too early to tell if he will keep his promises, but they have placed their trust in him and his politics setting an example for the rest of the world.

Reactions have come quickly. The experts believe that his victory is also one for the cannabis industry itself and, in fact, the stock values of the country's main cannabis companies have risen in recent days. For example, Canopy Growth Corp, the country's largest producer, is up 21%. Brands of medical marijuana, like Tweed and Bedrocan, are up 29%. Those heading up these companies believe that they will finally see legalisation with their own eyes.
