NBA Players Support the Legalisation of Medical cannabis

  • Basketball star Kevin Durant was discovered with what may have been medical marijuana. The debate about whether the NBA should allow its athletes to medicate themselves with the plant has come to the fore again.

A few days ago, upon exiting a Beverly Hills nightclub, Kevin Durant encountered a group of reporters. The well-known Oklahoma City Thunder basketball player was preparing to take off in his car when, opening the door, he dropped a small, elongated cylinder with a white cap.

Many suspect that it could have been medical cannabis, and not only based on what that receptacle looked like, but because the player is in Los Angeles recovering from a foot injury (he has suffered several), making it very possible that he actually needs medicinal marijuana to deal with the pain.

Although Durant could have obtained this treatment in a totally legal way under state law (since use of the plant for medical use is accepted in California), the NBA prohibits its players from consuming it–even though at each big celebration the media shows the different teams in the locker rooms, smoking cigarettes and drinking unabashedly.

Perhaps for this reason, and because the plant's benefits for those with these kinds type of injuries have been demonstrated (as for those NFL players suffer), several NBA players believe that the consumption of medical marijuana should be permitted by the country's basketball league. This, at least, is what a survey carried out by TMZ suggests. This agency says it polled ten active players, who opted to remain anonymous.

The athletes indicated that if a patient has a doctor's prescription, it is ridiculous that he cannot use it. They also stated that, while the NBA doesn't need to endorse the plant, it should allow those players who need it to have access to it. They believe that their appeals will be heard, especially because the league's mentality is much more open than that of other sports organisation: it has already been a pioneer in the promotion of tolerance and respect for homosexual players. They know that not all is lost.
