Wine with Marihuana, Much More than Just a Fad

  • The relationship of these two products as a brew might have more than 3,700 years and, according to the existing historical data, it played a major role in religious rituals, as well as becoming a product with strong medicinal powers.

Anyone would love to accompany delicious meals with a fine glass of wine and then enjoy, calmly, a marijuana cigarette. In some places in the United States, a drink with both substances is being marketed, a new trend that may become stronger in the coming years. Those who have tried it say that the result, although it may not have the effect that many would expect, is remarkable: it acts like any other grass, but adding more flavour and consistency to the wine itself.

However, the relationship between wine and marijuana has been brewing for thousands of years. Specifically, the concoction in which both ally might have over 3700 years and, according to available data, their combination results in a product with strong medicinal powers that many overlook.

According to historical information, this drink, fortified with cannabis, has been used as a kind of anaesthesia in surgery. In fact, records show that the existing uses of cannabis for medicinal purposes date back to the 28th century B.C. Archaeological discoveries show that one of the first Chinese surgeons already used resin to reduce pain during interventions. Mixing it with wine would lead to a stronger and more effective drink.

Besides this, there is also clear evidence that there has always been presence of marijuana and wine in certain religious rituals. Carl Ruck, professor at Boston University, who has studied the relationship between the two products, ensures that this mixture has accompanied religion from its origin. There is evidence, for example, in Israel, of a winery from the 1,700 B.C. where both treats were found.

A tradition that comes from so far cannot be overlooked. This is why in many places where medical cannabis is regulated, some patients claim for it. Farmer Lisa Molyneux, for example, has made her cannabis wine become one of many patients’ favourite products in California.
