Why Are Marijuana Photos Disappearing from Instagram?

  • A few months ago numerous marijuana-related Instagram accounts began to disappear, as if by magic, with this situation generating quite a bit of controversy in the cannabis community. There does exist a technical explanation: if many people register complaints about a given account, it is shut down, just like that.

It does not seem that Instagram has anything against accounts that publish photos of marijuana, which for some time now have been vanishing from the social network. Rather, the disappearance of profiles related to cannabis seems to be related to a policy with regards to its followers: anyone can complain about a user whose published material considers being inappropriate. If a user has too many complaints from others, the social network automatically eliminates the account, without much consideration.

The controversy that has arisen is understandable, as these accounts are used by both marijuana lovers and dispensaries that–thanks to labels like #marijuana, #weed or #420 –obtain hundreds and even thousands of followers, who later have a positively impact on their business. In fact, Instagram was until now the main social network for the cannabis community, as it allows connections between consumers and quality suppliers. When these accounts are eliminated, these users are lost.

With more than 100,000 followers, the CannabisCommunity account is one of the most seriously affected. It no longer exists. Others have chosen to start from square one, and a few fortunate users, like the rapper Berner, have managed to get their accounts restored after being eliminated.

As not all users have been so lucky, the rapper thinks that it is necessary to promote a new platform totally designed for those sharing a love for the plant. A platform that can be used in a way similar to Instagram by both medicinal and recreational marijuana dispensaries. Will this be the best way to avoid greater evils?
