California resident Wendy Mansfield had an appointment with a veterinarian to put down her ill dog, an old Labrador that suffered from chronic pain, was apathetic and depressed. Just 20 minutes after trying it, the animal ceased to exhibit signs of pain. After two or three cakes, the dog got up to drink some water and went outside to stretch his legs a little–something he had not done in a long time. Mansfield then decided to cancel her appointment with her vet: she felt that she had her pet back, and resolved to continue buying the little cookies from the store “Auntie Dolores,” which sells all type of hemp-based, low-THC products.

And she's not alone. With the burgeoning business in marijuana a new market segment has been opening up in recent months, and seems to be up-and-coming: foods containing marijuana for old and ill pets. Canna-Pet is an example of a company dedicated to the sale of these types of products. If benefits from contributions by scientists, researchers and veterinarians, and offers products with cannabidiol in the form of cakes, pouches (traditional medication style) and capsules, the best options for those who want to give their pets a better quality of life.

The first companies created to cover this market, however, must convince investors and caregivers that their products can be beneficial for their animals. They also face laws that still do not allow the prescription of cannabis-containing medications for animals (although in the United States many places do allow them for people). At this time some have decided to take the first step, like the State of Nevada, which is debating a bill to give animal lovers hope in this regard.
