Free Cannabis for ill Andalusians

  • Marbella is the last city in the region to adopt the initiative to share medical cannabis with those who need it. The associations have become the principal source of support for ill people who need the plant.

Twelve cannabis collectives in Andalusia have joined a free medicinal marijuana bank that puts ill people in contact with growers over the internet, so that the latter can give their produce to those who need it. The associations have almost become the sole source of support for people who need to medicate with cannabis.

The virtual bank that is not for profit was created out of the association Amigos de María. It aims to improve the lives of ill people and lessen their pain by working in collaboration with those who know about the curing properties of medical marijuana. It is also responsible for informing patients about questions relating to THC in cannabis.

According to the lawyer José Cosin, who works with the collective, the medicinal properties of cannabis have been more than adequately proven, and thanks to the professionals behind the bank scheme, the provision will be controlled. According to the legal professional, the consumption of 80 grams per month will be allowed, and cannabis clubs themselves will donate resin to elderly people and people who need it but do not know how to acquire it.

Cosin explains that a lot of elderly people find that medical cannabis works for types of pain that standard medication does not help “but they do not know how to obtain it. They are of an age where they do not know where to purchase it, and our clubs solve the problem for them. Nevertheless, everything is medically controlled”. One example is the case of Rosario. She is 68 years old and it has been 10 years since her doctor talked to her about using cannabis to combat fibromyalgia. She got the plant through her grandchildren until she found out about the Acción Cannábica association who now provide her with it.

Marbella’s Golden Mile is the last place where this community bank has been introduced, and it will need help from political progress on the matter. At the moment, these twelve collectives are hoping to agree to a legislative initiative to regulate marijuana social clubs in Andalusia, following in the footsteps of other Spanish areas.
