Take-off for the First Aeroplane Made Entirely from Hemp

  • Get ready because the first aeroplane in the world made out of hemp is taking off. Bicycles have already been made using the material but there is still a lot of investigation left to be undertaken in the transport sector.

Derek Kesek, a hemp enthusiast and head of the Canadian company Hempearth is responsible for making the first plane in the world using hemp. Although the project is still in the financing stage, the idea, the first tests and the design are all in progress.

Almost 75% of the aircraft has been made using help: from the wings to the seats, cushions and the outside covering. Additionally, the aeroplane will operate using fuel made from a variant of the cannabis plant.

The aeroplane is almost three times cheaper than conventional models that are usually made from fibreglass, and it is equally or even more resistant than standard aeroplanes, as demonstrated by experts involved in the production process.

Furthermore, at 12 metres long, the plane is designed to include four seats and two engines that mean it can fly at 337.96 kilometres per hour. If everything goes according to plan, it will measure 12 metres.

The creator claims that he based the design around one of Henry Ford’s first creations, a car that was also built using hemp and that was designed to use fuel made from the plant.

If all of this already seems a little ambitious, for Kesek this is only just the beginning of what is to come. He dreams of building a hemp spaceship and hopes to become as important as someone as Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin airline and the airspace spin-off Virgin Galactic and a true guru in the business world.
