Cannabis Weddings Are a Sensation in Oregon

  • Whitney and John, a recently married couple, were clear from the start that they wanted to offer cannabis to their guests. They set aside alcohol, and those attending ended up more than happy with a decision that will mark a before and after for these type of celebrations.

The legalisation of marijuana in Oregon is having revolutionary effects on even the most traditional and unsuspected areas of life, and all within a very short amount of time ever since the coming into effect of the Law that permits the recreational use of cannabis. Smoking marijuana has become a collective pleasure, an activity that is best enjoyed at outstanding events where great changes are celebrated.

Now, the plant is consumed without embarrassment at wedding banquets. In addition to the church, the guests, a copious amount of food, and the dance floor, those attending can enjoy the pleasant taste of their favourite strain. This is an opportunity that many citizens have long been waiting for. At the end of the day, if there have been open bars with alcohol for many years, then why not offer guests an open bar (up to a certain limit of course) with their favourite product?

That is what Whitney Alexander and John Elledge, a recently married couple, thought. For legal reasons, they had to choose between offering alcohol or cannabis (state regulations stipulate that "catering" companies cannot serve both substances at the same time), and they did not hesitate. "We made sure that everything was legal", says Elledge. Evidently, they only offered up to the legal limit, around 8 ounces (226 grams), in 13 different strains.

The bride decided to name the space where the product was served: the "cannabar" (cannabis bar). Even now, sometime after the experience, the couple say that the number of people who were delighted by the decision has left a big impact on them. "I still read messages from guests who say that they enjoyed the marijuana", affirms Elledge. An 81 year old lady even ended up trying it.

They left nothing to chance: they wanted the event to be perfect. Therefore, they hired a wedding planner, Lake Oswego that also took charge of the matter. The company declared that it was the first time that someone had made such a request. "We made sure that it was all safe". At the moment, Elledge (who is a professional grower), is happy to have participated in something that experts believe will mark the beginning of a new trend.
